How To Make My Passport For Mac Compatible With Pc

Hi newbie here. I'm in quite a predicament. Here's the situation: I got a macbook, a WD mybook external drive for that macbook, and a windows desktop pc. I'm trying to transfer files from mac to windows, but apparently I have to reformat my WD drive to make it compatible for both computers. The only problem with that is my WD drive already has quite a lot of data in it (~1TB) and I dont think I can transfer all that to the mac so I can wipe my WD drive clean for the format. Is there some workaround to this or would I need another drive?
